Shot blasting is a highly controlled surface preparation process that uses spherical steel shots propelled at high velocity to clean, strengthen, and prepare metal surfaces. It is one of the most reliable techniques for achieving consistent surface profiles across large industrial components and structural elements.
Unlike grit blasting which uses angular media, shot blasting employs rounded steel balls that impact the surface with a peening action. This not only removes contaminants and old coatings but also compresses the surface layer, improving its fatigue resistance and mechanical strength. It is extensively used in steel fabrication, bridge construction, and heavy manufacturing.
Steel shots are propelled using centrifugal wheel blast machines or pneumatic systems. Surface cleanliness and profile are checked after blasting to ensure they meet the project specification before protective coatings are applied.
